You can't avoid it on the radio. So let me throw this out there. Joe Flacco is a very good QB but should not be considered elite and certainly should not be a top 5 paid QB in the league.

Did Flacco play elite in the play-offs...yes. Does that mean he is elite...no.
Lets look at his last two years of work.

2012 Regular Season
Passer Rating ranking 12th in the league with a rating of 87.7

2011 Regular Season
Passer Rating ranking of 18th in the league with a rating of 80.9

How about completion percentage...
2012 Ranked 19th out of all QBs with a percentage of 59.7%

2011 Ranked 26th out of all QBs with a percentage of 57.6%

The guy is good...no doubt but to compare him with the best is absurd. he played well and in my opinion was aided by some of the worst coverage I have ever seen. In the Denver game the Hail Mary and in the Super Bowl...heck name the play the 49ers were leaving guys wide open!!!

Not knocking the guy but lets be realistic.

I'm not saying he is and I am not saying he isn't, but he has as many rings as Johnny Unitas, Joe Namath, Peyton Manning, Steve Young, Brett Favre, Drew Breese, and 1 more than Dan Marino. That's the only stat that matters to me. Some people (NOT ME) put Romo in the "Elite" category cause his numbers are better than Aikman's. I call B.S. Aikman has 3 of them rings. Numbers are for people that think to much. Only number that counts to me is S.B. rings. The man did take an average offense 1 play from a S.B. last year and all the way this year. Just saying...............

Way to early to call Flacco elite. He is a very good quarterback but normally one does not reach elite status untlil passed the midpoint of their careers. He is only 28 and just hitting his stride. Lets see how he plays the next couple of seasons to see if the facts backup the euphoria of the present.

Here are some QBs with Super Bowl wins:
Trent Dilfer
Mark Rypien
Jeff Hostetler
Phil Sims (great example of good QB not elite)
Doug Williams

He has never cracked 60% completions or a 90 in the passer rating. Granted he played as good as anyone this play-offs but it took a huge blown coverage for him to make the Super Bowl against Denver. If that pass is broken up as it should have been...NO ONE is calling him elite and some would have asked for his head.

Elite in my opinion: Tom Brady, Peyton Manning

A Level Down: Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers

I don't see Eli Manning as elite.

Like Joe said, it's just way to early to start that conversation.

Jim McMahan won a Super Bowl in 1985 with the Bears his numbers that year were better than Flacco's from a completion percentage and passing rating standpoint. McMahan was never elite.

My issue is that we want someone to be elite...we desperately are seeking the next class of elite QBs with the aging Manning, Brees and Brady.

Now I could be wrong...Flacco could use this as a spring board, but to me that is a huge financial risk that can hamstring your organization for the next 5 years.

I only see one active QB as elite and that is Brady. I think the term "elite" is passed around to easily.

You know there is a strong argument for what you just wrote. Peyton Manning while no doubt one of the best all-time regular season QBs has a losing record in the play-offs. Hard to say that is elite.

I think you could also say that Brady was elite and is now on a dliding scale with age.

Elite? He got the job done. Been many QB's that fail miserably to get the job done that were damn good QB's. He played with some serious heart, unlike Manning the cinderalla story, and that is why he won the championship this year. Look back at Fouts, Kelly, Marino, and a few others. They had the stats, but no ring. Does Elite really mean anything to the rankings of these guys? Winners are remembered. Second place usually is a forgotten sole.

The winner is only remembered if they can repeat the performance or they can achieve performance season after season. Look back not that long ago...Trent Dilfer.

Good point, I forgot about Kelly and Fouts. Both had good numbers with out the ring, but I remember McMahon, Simms, Dilfer, and even Brad Johnson.

By the way...not that it means the world but the last Ravens team to win the Super Bowl was QBed by Trent Dilfer who had a higher pass completion percentage that Flacco during that regular season. He wasn't considered elite either.

LL, if you were an Elite QB, would you want to be remembered as Elite? or SuperBowl Champion? I would put money on it these guys that didn't get a SuperBowl ring would give up their status and records for that SuperBowl ring. No?

Well that depends. Now this is not my opinion but one that I have heard. To most professional football players the most rewarding honor is to become a Hall of Famer. Not my words, but I have heard it said by Jerry Rice, Chris Carter, Joe Montana and Steve Young. It means that you were the best of the best.

My argument is only that the word "elite" should not be applied to Flacco...at least not yet. His play-off performance was elite this year but he will be looking for a pay day equal to Tom Brady and Peyton Manning and (IMO) he is no where in that company. Those two can win games almost single handedly whereas Flacco needs support. We are a hail mary and a kick-off run back from rewriting history. Now the run back is one thing but the Hail Mary is another.

I am happy for him...great...but a $100 million dollar pay day on a guy who doesn't carry a team yet is too much. He should be paid top 8 money just not top 2.

LL, It is sick what these guys are getting paid. The vast majority are overpaid. Ticket prices go up, and they wonder why nobody shows up to the Stadium. I remember back in the day when Dad hung out with many Chargers. One Charger borrowed money from Dad, only to be paid back and have check bounce. True Story. Now these guys are swimming in cash. Many not very responsible for Hall of Famers.
